Diets work because you get less fructose

    August 19, 2008 // No Comments »

For those of you who follow this site you’ll know that I have a particular interest in the relationship between carbohydrates and fat - this article just confirms what we know to be true empirically to be true scientifically.

According to new research, people on low-carb diets lose weight in part because they get less fructose, a type of sugar that can be made into body fat quickly.

The study shows that the type of carbs someone eats can be as important as the amount. Although fructose is naturally found in high levels in fruit, it is also added to many processed foods, especially in the form of high-fructose corn syrup.

For the study, six healthy people performed three different tests involving drinking various mixes of glucose and fructose. Researchers found that fructose turned into body fat much more quickly, and that having it for breakfast changed how the body handled fats at lunch.

US Centre for Disease Control - switch emphasis to prevention

    July 11, 2008 // No Comments »

I gather from something I read yesterday that the US CDC has begun to recognise that the over reliance on medication has proved to be such a threat to the US economy and security that it has announced a dramatic change in emphasis. I’ve been able to validate the source of the report and looking at the CDC website there is some evidence of a change. However, I remember the UK Cancer Charity said much the same 3 or 4 years ago but I’ve not seen any change in approach yet. So I’m sceptical that the pharmaceutical lobby will not resist such a change.

However, if its true then it could herald the best dawn we’ve seen in years. Yes we all agree that wellness (the absence of disease) must be our focus and for the US CDC to come out and say so is huge. Our approach has to be to keep people as well as possible for as long as possible and when disease does rear its head then treat by the best means we have.Presently only about 5% of healthcare money goes on prevention - what would happen if that multiplied by a factor of 5 times. Would that make a dent in the problem - yes of course it would. Imagine what that would accomplish! However, and it isa serious thought where are the food companies in all of this discussion - because unless they change their approach too then the change is rather idealistic.

What would happen if we spent money, serious money, on studying the causes of illness and disease. I wonder how the pharmaceutical companies would feel if and when, together with the food industry, they had to face the music that they were not only part of the problem but also were exposed as the arch protagonists.

So then, health authorities see what is happening and are calling for a major shift to true health care. That’s a paradigm change — a radical change in thinking. And when such changes happen, they always occur suddenly, like a dam bursting.

So lets wait and see if the actions match the intent or for that matter what the food industry and pharmaceutical industry’s response will be. I guess they may try to stop it all by CODEX.

    Aspartame - It isn’t safe

    June 16, 2008 // No Comments »

You’ve probably heard the adage “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” as many times as I have over the years. In fact, there have been plenty of days where I’ve used it as my personal mantra. But all morale-boosting aside, there are some instances where it isn’t true. Take aspartame, for example.

For years, the food industry and mainstream health “experts” have clung to the idea that this artificial sweetener is safe for human consumption because, they claim, there is no concrete proof that it’s toxic. Of course, you and I both know that simply isn’t true. But even if it was, the argument doesn’t hold much water: Just because something may not be poisonous doesn’t make it safe – after all, I buy non-toxic carpet cleaner, but I don’t think it would be a good idea to put it on ice and drink it with a twist of lemon.

But it looks like some new research has shot even more holes in the mainstream’s already-flimsy case for aspartame.

A recent review published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that while aspartame may not kill you, it certainly won’t make you stronger. In fact, it may have a significant weakening impact on your brain, setting you up for problems ranging from mental and emotional disturbances to learning disabilities.

According to this recent analysis, despite what earlier studies and reviews have claimed, aspartame does appear to cause both direct and indirect changes in brain chemistry. The researchers found that, among other negative effects, aspartame can disturb the brain’s ability to metabolize amino acids and proteins, damage the integrity of nucleic acids, and interfere with the functioning of neurons.

Based on all of the data they examined, the research team concluded that “excessive aspartame ingestion might be involved in the pathogenesis of certain mental disorders, and also in compromised learning and emotional functioning.”

Sacrificing your mental and emotional function to save calories is hardly a worthwhile trade-off. Save yourself the risk — and the calories — by sticking to natural sweeteners like trehalose, which are both available in natural food stores.

Hair Loss - Low GI Diet?

    January 24, 2008 // No Comments »

Hi I’m a great devotee of the Low GI diet and have been for years - it is one of our threads in our quest to stay healthy. I was surprised when i read that a Low GI diet not only helps keep weight in the normal range but may also aid hair restoration. But once again when i read about what sucrose does to the body in my last post i realised that it also affects the hormonal system - hence the link with hair loss. Want to keep your hair - go Low GI, want to get pregnant - go Low GI, want to lose weight - go low GI. In fact if you want to live long and prosper - go Low GI

How can I prevent hair loss?

Thinning hair isn’t just a problem for men—like many women, Kristin is experiencing hair loss. “I want to know how to slow it down, how to prevent it, and what are my options to try to get the thickness back,” she says.

Dr. Northrup says that Kristin’s thinning hair may be a result of a hormonal imbalance. “You can get it back by eating a low-glycemic diet, making sure that you are on supplements,” she says.

According to Dr. Northrup, glycemic foods can cause dramatic changes in the body. “One of the things that often happens in mid-life to people is if they have a lot of stress hormones in their system and they’re eating a high-glycemic diet, and the high insulin is in their blood from the high sugar … that actually changes the way hormones are metabolized. So you actually begin to shoot your estrogen and progesterone into androgen-like substances that produce male pattern baldness in women. Have you seen this—where [women] start to get a beard and they get thinning of the hair at the temples and so on?”

Other than a low-glycemic diet, Dr. Northrup has one other recommendation for thinning hair. “Acupuncture can be very, very helpful for it,” she says.

Sugar and Refined Carbohydrates - make us infertile?

    // No Comments »

OK - the headline may be a bit extreme but in reading the article below i realised that the truth about sucrose and refined carbohydrate being nutritionally empty is a little short of the mark. It seems that everywhere i turn there are growing bodies of opinion that sucrose or refined carbohydrates are actively damaging our health. One of the areas i have specialised in for 8 years is the nutritional relationship between being able to conceive and being infertile.

Xylitol and Insulin Resistance, Diabetes Hypertension and Hormonal Imbalances

Consuming sugar and other refined carbohydrates results in the rapid release of glucose, or blood sugar. In response, the pancreas secretes insulin to usher glucose into the cells, where it is burned for energy. Excess glucose stresses the system, and over time the cells become less responsive to insulin. This condition, known as insulin resistance, is a huge health problem and it is estimated to affect half the American population. Insulin resistance is associated with abnormalities in cholesterol and triglyceride levels, hypertension, increased risk of heart disease and diabetes (and much more - read on)

    Fructose - Glucose - Sucrose = Villains?

    January 19, 2008 // 3 Comments »

Hi – if you are a regular reader of this blog you’ll know that one of my over riding themes is diabetes and poor understanding of the causes. Occasionally you get one of those ‘aha moments’ which just suggest further linkage. This article discusses the fructose-diabetes-High Fructose Corn Syrup-Sucrose linkage and surprisingly comes up with another item I’ve talked about Nitric Oxide (NO) and blood circulation. It would appear that NO and Diabetes are linked by the thread – Fructose leads to increased Uric Acid – high levels of Uric Acid – reduce Nitric Oxide levels – low levels of Nitric Oxide reduce the effectiveness of Insulin – and that leads to Insulin resistance and Metabolic Syndrome. OK – why is this interesting? I’ve just had a blood test with high levels of uric acid –in fact my Dr thinks it is why I’m getting some joint pain like Gout. I have been looking at ways of reducing the Uric acid levels by diet but never linked up all the above. Increase the NO levels in the blood by diet (see my article on NO and L-Arginnine), decrease the levels of high fructose corn syrup and decrease the amounts of glucose – see the article on Trehalose. Boy is this interesting. If you want an alternative to Glucose, Sucrose and Fructose - try Trehalose

This is so interesting I need to make a short video of the linkages.

    Announcement - water based skincare

    December 18, 2007 // No Comments »

At long last i have found a true water based skin care system suitable for all skin types but importantly one that does not have Parabens or chemical preservatives in it. Parabens are chemicals required by many products to prolong shelf life. Sadly they also damage the very skin we are trying to protect.

There will be much more on this subject over the coming days.
